Since 2011, True Up has been a beacon of support for young people in foster care across Kentucky. With a mission to help these youth transition from structured environments to self-sufficiency, True Up stands on several crucial pillars that guide its work and impact. Here’s a closer look at these pillars and why they are essential for the success of foster youth and alumni.

1. Advocacy and Empowerment: True Up empowers youth to advocate for their rights and needs, supporting efforts for systemic change and social justice. By building advocacy skills, young people gain the confidence and tools needed to voice their concerns and effect positive change in their own lives and communities.

2. Career and Educational Advancement: Navigating the path to a fulfilling career and continuing education are cornerstones of independence. True Up helps youth explore career options, set goals, and develop actionable plans. This pillar also supports pursuing higher education, certifications, and vocational training, opening doors to opportunities and helping them build a successful future.

3. Community Service: Engaging in community service fosters a sense of purpose and

connection. True Up encourages youth to give back to their communities, enriching their own lives while helping others and building a sense of belonging.

4. Financial Management: Understanding how to manage money is a fundamental skill for independence. True Up connects young people to programs, training, and community organizations that teach budgeting, saving, and responsible spending. Mastering financial management helps youth gain confidence in their ability to handle finances and make informed decisions.

5. Healthy Relationships: Building and maintaining healthy relationships is vital for emotional well-being. True Up provides guidance on creating positive connections, starting with peer-to-peer support. These relationships offer stability and a sense of belonging, which are crucial for personal growth.

6. Housing Stability: Stable housing is a key component of self-sufficiency. True Up assists in connecting young people to partners who can help find and maintain safe, affordable housing. This pillar ensures that youth have a secure place to call home, which is essential for building a stable life and for overall well being.

7. Mental and Physical Health: Addressing both mental and physical health is fundamental to overall well-being. True Up provides access to resources and support for managing health, ensuring that youth can thrive emotionally and physically.

8. Parenting Support: For those who become parents, having the skills to raise children effectively is crucial. True Up offers resources and support for young parents, helping them provide a nurturing environment for their children and break the cycles of generational trauma.

9. Transportation Access: Reliable transportation is essential for accessing education, employment, and social opportunities. True Up helps youth secure transportation solutions, removing a significant barrier to achieving their goals.

By focusing on these pillars, True Up equips foster youth with the skills, resources, and support they need to thrive as they transition to from structured environments to independent living. Each pillar plays a crucial role in ensuring success and well-being. As we continue to make strides, we invite other organizations and community partners to join us in this mission.
