The urgent need to decrease disproportionality of Black/African-American youth in Kentucky’s foster care system continues to be reiterated every time young adults with a foster care history share their lived experiences.
Goals of the Truth Telling Circles and the Thriving Families, Safer Children project work include increased community awareness and the importance of providing race-based trauma and culturally relevant trainings to everyone who supports Black/African-American youth and young adults, for the purpose of strengthening individuals and organizations advocacy actions.
Recently, Kentucky Youth Advocates, True Up, and community partners hosted a Truth Telling Charrette with conversations on disrupting the racial disproportionality in Kentucky’s foster care system, listening to foster care alumni and community partners, and creating action steps for transformational change through truth telling. The outcomes we seek are collective efforts for systematic changes and solutions of the most impactful challenges identified by young adults and community partners.
