Are you passionate about making a difference in the foster care system? Do you have lived experience in foster care or kinship care and want to help others while building your leadership and advocacy skills? If so, we want you to be part of True Up’s Peer Network!

Expectations:

Attend In-Person Monthly Meetings: Participate in regular Peer Network and Champions meetings to connect with other peers, partner organizations, and policymakers.

Peer-to-Peer Support: Share your experiences and insights to offer guidance and support to others in the foster care community.

Advocacy & Leadership: Actively participate in advocacy opportunities, including meetings with policymakers, and build your leadership skills through training and hands-on experiences.

Collaborate for Change: Work alongside other alumni to identify solutions and advocate for policies that will improve the foster care system for future generations

Who Should Apply:

Age: 18-26 years old with a verifiable history in foster care or kinship care.

Passion for Change: A strong desire to advocate for positive reforms in the foster care system.

Growth Mindset: Willingness to engage in open communication, learn,
and grow as a leader and advocate.

Commitment: Able to commit to monthly meetings and advocacy activities.

What We Offer:

Leadership & Advocacy Training: Gain essential skills in advocacy, leadership, and communication to become an effective changemaker in the foster care system.

In-Person Retreats: Attend two interactive retreats that will deepen your connections, enhance your skills, and equip you with the tools you need to advocate for
meaningful change.

Supportive Community: Connect with a dynamic group of peers who share your experiences and passion for creating change.

Payment for your expertise: While this is not a job, we do pay young adults for sharing their lived experience and their commitment to make change.

Diverse Advocacy Opportunities: Use your voice in a variety of ways – from speaking at legislative hearings and engaging in social media campaigns, to meeting with state legislators and drafting policy recommendations.

 

Training in True Up’s 9 Pillars: Participate in workshops and activities around key areas, including:

    • Advocacy & Empowerment

    • Career & Educational Attainment

    • Community Service

    • Financial Management

    • Healthy Relationships

    • Housing Stability

    • Mental & Physical Health

True Up Impact Highlights:

Advocacy at the Federal Level: Our Peer Network has met with the federal delegation in Washington, DC, to discuss key issues impacting foster youth.

Youth-Led Research & Policy Change: Our youth-led residential report directly influenced the passage of SB 48 and A6 Educational Program Accountability.

Foster Youth Housing Initiative: Advocated for emergency housing supports and systemic changes to improve housing stability for foster youth.
